          Pinayur is a hamlet near Chingleput in Kanchipuram district south of Chennai in South

India. It lies on the banks of the River Palar. There are about 200 families living there with a

population of about 1500 people. The main livelihood is agriculture and the major crops are

rice, groundnuts and sugarcane. There is a village panchayat school. upto Class Five with two

teachers.The nearest medical facilities are at least 15 kms away.Sanitation is very poor and

drinking water facilities are minimal. Tanks & wells are the main source of water and irrigation

in this area. The women are however very smart and have formed themselves into Self Help

Groups and are willing to learn and become self sufficient.
